When it comes to tire manufacturing, most people think of the "main" processes of mixing, rolling, molding, and vulcanization, but few people pay attention to the disc-shaped plastic tools that flow along with the tire beads on the production line - the Bead Spacer. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's just an auxiliary fixture, the bead separator plays a crucial role in preventing adhesion, maintaining geometric shape, and ensuring automated positioning accuracy during the shaping, stacking, and conveying processes of steel wire rings and triangular rubber (Apex). It serves as an important link between semi-finished products and finished product quality.

1、 The Real Role of Bead Wrap in Tire Manufacturing

The tire bead of a radial tire is composed of a steel wire ring, a triangular rubber strip, a wrapping cloth, etc. When it is just bonded, the rubber material is still in an uncured state, with a soft and sticky texture. Multiple sets of tire beads need to be stacked for temporary storage or transferred to the molding machine. Without isolation measures, two major problems may occur: first, the upper and lower layers of uncured rubber materials adhere to each other, causing deformation of the rubber materials due to pulling and pulling during use; The second issue is that the bottom tire bead is subjected to excessive pressure, causing displacement of the steel wire ring and distortion of the triangular rubber section, ultimately affecting the dynamic balance and uniformity of the tire.

The bead spacer (also known as the triangular rubber shaping plate or bead spacer) is usually a disc-shaped structure that matches the curved surface of the bead. It has a large hole in the center for heat dissipation and process operation. The inner cavity sidewall has positioning ribs, and the bottom has a stepped interlocking structure for easy stacking. It not only separates the rubber material to avoid contact, but also supports the tire bead with a matching curved surface to maintain its designed cross-sectional shape until it is fed into the forming drum for wrapping.

2、 Why Apex Disc has become a standard in the industry

Early factories attempted to use hard cardboard, wooden boards, or ordinary plastic sheets for isolation, but cardboard absorbed moisture and debris, wooden boards were difficult to clean and easily contaminated with rubber, and ordinary plastics had large size differences and easily scratched rubber surfaces, all of which were difficult to meet the requirements of modern tire factories. The mainstream choice now is PP bead separators - made from polypropylene (PP) through precision injection molding or biaxial stretching, with comprehensive performance superior to traditional materials.

Dimensional stability and non hygroscopicity: PP has a 24-hour water absorption rate of less than 0.01%, and there is almost no expansion or contraction in high humidity or temperature changing workshops. The thickness tolerance can be controlled within ± 0.05mm, ensuring accurate grasping and positioning of the automatic line robotic arm and avoiding tire bead eccentricity.

Smooth surface, anti sticking and smooth demolding: The surface roughness Ra of high-quality PP bead separators is less than 0.8 μ m, presenting a mirror like state with extremely low friction coefficient, greatly reducing the adhesion with uncured rubber material. During demolding, there is no pulling or scratching of the bead surface.

Heat resistance, oil resistance, and corrosion resistance: The modified PP can achieve a thermal deformation temperature of over 120 ℃ and maintain rigidity without deformation in high-temperature environments near the vulcanization zone; At the same time, it can withstand long-term corrosion from rubber additives, release agents, and cleaning solvents, and has a long cycle life.

Lightweight, environmentally friendly and recyclable: PP density is only 0.90-0.91g/cm ³, easy to handle, in compliance with RoHS environmental standards, and can be recycled and pelletized after scrapping, in line with the green manufacturing trend of the tire industry.

3、 Benefit and Scope of Application

In the production of all steel, semi steel radial tires, and some engineering tires, PP bead separators are widely used for isolation, storage, and forming feeding stations after steel wire triangle rubber bonding. Its curved surface design and through-hole heat dissipation structure not only prevent deformation caused by stacking and compression, but also accelerate the heat dissipation of the rubber material, reducing the number of defective products caused by tire bead defects. A qualified PP partition can be recycled thousands of times, significantly reducing the cost of single piece isolation and industrial solid waste compared to disposable paper partitions.
